Pix is the instant payment system created by the Central Bank of Brazil (BCB). Launched in 2020, it has revolutionized how people and companies transfer money, enabling transactions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays.
The main feature of Pix is its speed: a transfer is completed in up to 10 seconds. The service was designed to be a faster, cheaper, and more secure alternative to traditional methods like DOC (Credit Order Document) and TED (Available Electronic Transfer).
Main Features
- Instant Transfers: Send and receive money in seconds, directly between bank accounts.
- QR Code Payments: Pay for purchases in physical and online stores by scanning a QR Code with your phone.
- Pix Keys: Make it easier to receive money by using a “nickname” for your account, which can be your CPF/CNPJ (taxpayer ID), email, phone number, or a random key.
- Pix Saque and Pix Troco (Pix Withdraw and Pix Change): Withdraw cash at participating commercial establishments.
- Scheduled Pix: Schedule transfers and payments for a future date.
How Does Pix Work?
To use Pix, you just need an account at a bank, fintech, or payment institution that participates in the system. Access is done directly through your financial institution’s app. You can initiate a payment by entering the recipient’s Pix key, scanning a QR Code, or entering their account details, just like a regular transfer.
What to do if Pix is down?
Pix relies on the infrastructure of the Central Bank and financial institutions. If you are facing issues:
- Check your institution: The problem might be specific to your bank. Check your bank’s status or contact their support.
- Check the general status: Visit the Pix status page to check for any general incidents reported by the Central Bank.
- Test your connection: Internet problems can prevent communication with the bank’s servers. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
