Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT down right now?
Check the official status page at status.openai.com. If there’s an incident, waiting for stabilization is usually best.
“Something went wrong.” — what does it mean?
It’s a generic error that can be either a service issue or something in your browser/network. Refresh, start a new chat, and check the status page.
“A network error occurred.” / websocket error
This usually points to connectivity problems (VPN/proxy, security filters, extensions, unstable network). Disable VPN/proxy, try a private window, and test another network.
ChatGPT opens but doesn’t respond / gets stuck generating
- Refresh the page and try “Regenerate”
- Try a private window
- Disable extensions (especially ad blockers/privacy tools)
- Switch networks (Wi‑Fi ↔ 4G/5G)
“Unusual activity detected”
This often happens when traffic looks automated or comes from flagged/shared IPs (VPN/proxy). Disable VPN, restart the browser, and try again.
Does clearing cache/cookies actually help?
Yes. If the problem is a session/cookie issue or an extension conflict, clearing cache/cookies or using a private window frequently fixes it.
Could it be only my computer?
Yes. A simple test:
- does it work on your phone (4G/5G)?
- does it work in another browser? If yes, it’s likely local (extension, cache, DNS/VPN).
Where do I access ChatGPT?
The official web access is chatgpt.com.
